The Elswick Battery Diaries (1899–1902)

This rare military diary details the formation, movement, and battlefield action of the British 1st Northumberland Volunteer Artillery, known as the Elswick Battery, during the Second Anglo-Boer War.

A gift from Lady Meux to Lord Roberts, this battery of Elswick-made long-range 12-pounders was manned by factory workers from the Armstrong-Whitworth works. Their journey took them across the Transvaal, including a documented presence at Duivels Kantoor (Kaapsehoop), and saw them attached to Lord Roberts, General Hamilton, and others in key battles.
