Master of Ceremonies: Capt (SAN) Corrie van Rooyen Ret
Each November, we gather in the historic Kaapsehoop Cemetery to remember those who served — and those who never returned.
Now in its third year, the Discover Kaapsehoop Remembrance Day Commemoration honours the men, women and animals whose lives became part of the story of war and service across generations.
This year we are especially honoured to welcome the 1st Nelspruit Scout Troop. Their presence carries a deeply personal connection to Kaapsehoop: Shane Latré, a Border War veteran remembered in the cemetery, was himself a Springbok Scout with 1st Nelspruit. To have a new generation of Scouts standing in remembrance where one of their own is commemorated brings the story full circle.
A horse from Kaapsehoop Horse Trails will once again form part of the ceremony, representing the countless horses, dogs and other animals that served alongside people in wartime — animals that carried, protected, endured and died without ever having chosen the conflicts into which they were taken.
The commemoration will remember those connected with the Anglo-Boer War, First World War, Second World War, Delville Wood, the Border War and prisoners of war, while recognising the individual stories preserved within Kaapsehoop’s own cemetery and community.
This is not a celebration of war. It is an act of remembrance — of service, sacrifice, courage and loss.
All are welcome to attend. After the commemoration, please join us at Nagkantoor for a remembrance toast.
Lest We Forget.
