Climate, water and survival on the escarpment, 1892–1992.

For a century, rainfall decided everything on the mountain — access, mining, food, health, and whether people could stay. Two rare surviving records bracket that century.

Rainfall has always been one of the defining forces shaping life on the Kaapsehoop mountain. Long before modern weather stations, residents, prospectors and farmers understood that water determined everything — access routes, mining success, food security, health, and whether people could remain on the mountain at all.

A climate of its own

Because Kaapsehoop sits high on the Mpumalanga escarpment, its climate differs sharply from the Lowveld below. Mist, sudden storms, heavy summer rainfall and severe winter frosts have long defined daily life here. Yet continuous, reliable rainfall records for the mountain are rare.

A century in two records

This page brings together two surviving climate records that document Kaapsehoop’s rainfall across a full century — one from the early goldfields period, and one from the late-twentieth-century village era. Together they form the backbone of the Kaapsehoop Heritage Climate Archive: a rare, locally-kept measure of the mountain’s weather across generations.

Reading the record

The figures show the mountain’s characteristic high rainfall — annual totals frequently above 1,200 mm and, in the wettest years, over 1,600 mm, far above the Lowveld far below. The swings from year to year — a dry 844 mm in 1970, a drenching 1,629 mm two years later — are the same variations that shaped mining, farming and daily survival on the escarpment.

A record kept by hand

The late-twentieth-century figures come from a village rainfall record long maintained by hand — the tradition associated with Ivy Frances Nel, who kept the village’s principal rainfall journal over decades. It is one of the project’s most substantial single weather records for the escarpment, and a reminder that heritage is measured not only in buildings and battles but in the patient noting-down of the rain.
