Mobilisation Before the War
1898–1899 · A village preparing on paper.
For a year before the first shot, the paperwork of war gathered at Kaapsche Hoop — rifles requested, service-rolls compiled, the powder magazine repaired.
The Anglo-Boer War reached Kaapsche Hoop first as paperwork. For a year before the fighting began, the correspondence of the Barberton and Lydenburg officers shows a small mountain village steadily arming itself — the documentary signature of a community mobilising for a war that, in the end, never reached it in battle.
The first requests — 1898
In October 1898 the Speciale Landdrost at Barberton asked for 24 extra rifles to arm the burghers under the Veldcornet of Kaapsche Hoop. In November the village’s district doctor, Dr Heath, offered his services as a medical attendant in the event of war — an offer he would renew the following August.
The Mausers — 1899
Through August and September 1899 the traffic quickened. On 18 August the Landdrost requested 150 Mauser rifles and 60,000 rounds for Barberton, with 50 rifles and 12,000 rounds for Kaapsche Hoop. On 4 September the lists of dienstplichtige burgers — men liable for service in the wijk — were forwarded. On 13 September the Veldcornet asked for 50 Mausers, and on 14 September the Resident Justice sought authorisation to repair the Government powder magazine.

On the eve — late September 1899
On 27 September 1899 the Kommandant of Lydenburg requested 200 Mauser rifles and ammunition for Barberton and Kaapsche Hoop together, while the Veldcornet asked for provisions for the families of burghers already on commando. Cartridge-bands were sent to Godwan Station; receipt books for krijgsdienst were ordered. By the time the ultimatum expired on 11 October 1899, the village stood on a war footing — though no combat would ever take place on its ground.
