Kaapsehoop’s heritage work is carried out in the spirit of Mpumalanga Heritage — the provincial non-profit that researches, records and protects the region’s cultural past.
Mpumalanga Heritage is a volunteer-run non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting, documenting and sharing the cultural and historical legacy of Mpumalanga. Founded in 2012 and registered as a Non-Profit Organisation (Reg. 126-240 NPO) in 2013, it is proudly affiliated with the Heritage Association of South Africa (HASA). Its work is rooted in research, community participation and responsible heritage practice.
Our Mission
The organisation works to ensure that Mpumalanga’s valuable cultural heritage is retained for future generations — promoting the province’s history and prehistory, preserving documents, photographs and places of historical interest, and sharing knowledge through outings, talks and publications. It also stands watch against the neglect of, and threats to, the heritage that surrounds us.

What the Organisation Does
Its work falls into three streams. It protects and promotes the historical, cultural, architectural and archaeological heritage of the region — collecting and documenting records, maps and photographs, and supporting the conservation of artefacts and monuments. It identifies and researches heritage sites and cultural landscapes, advocating for their protection and acting as a community watchdog against threats to vulnerable assets. And it engages the public through outings, lectures, workshops and publications that make heritage accessible to residents, researchers and visitors alike.

The Kaapsehoop Connection
Kaapsehoop sits within the heritage landscape Mpumalanga Heritage works to protect, and much of the research behind this archive has been carried out in that same spirit of partnership. Members’ outings regularly bring them to the village and the wider De Kaap goldfields — to its cemetery, its ruins and its remembered ground — recording what survives and keeping the stories attached to the places they belong to.
