The Veld Pond: The Republic's Last Gold Coin
In the final months of the Anglo-Boer War, as the South African Republic fought for survival, a small wartime mint produced one of the most famous coins in South African history — the 1902 Veld Pond. Linked to Kaapsche Hoop through schoolmaster-turned-Mintmaster Philippus Johannes Kloppers, the story blends war, gold, and enduring mystery. More than a century later, the Veld Pond remains a symbol of resilience, ingenuity, and the closing chapter of a republic in its final days.
